Front Door Makeover

Front Door Makeover

When we bought a white house with black shutters, it seemed like a given to paint the front door red! I love traditional design schemes, so a white, black and red house will always have my heart. The first thing I did after closing on this home and getting my hands on the key was to promptly paint this door. And I’ve loved the look of it over the past few years!

I chose a flat paint finish, however, which has only been looking duller and dirtier over the years, so I knew it was time to do something to spruce up the front of the house for Fall (my favorite season)! We recently took a trip to the Berkshires, Massachusetts, and I chose that destination primarily for its literary attractions and its historic decorating inspiration. I went there with an eye for ideas for our home.

I immediately noticed how many dark green shutters and doors there were on the 18th and 19th century homes there (and I’ve really been on a dark green kick lately to begin with). Light bulb! I had my new color scheme for the house and couldn’t wait to tackle the project when I got home. A dark green door with gold details was exactly what our house-front needed.

I love the new look and it was a fairly inexpensive update! The makeover included new paint (semi-gloss finish this time, for a more elegant look), new brass hardware and kickplate, and finally a home for the lion doorknocker I bought back when we closed on the house in 2015. I was planning on a cohesive brass look for the makeover to begin with, but the old bronze hardware set needed to go in any case. The previous owners never gave us a key for the entry door, so we haven’t been able to use it for the last three years! I didn’t feel bad about splurging on a new set.

After the paint had more time to cure, I hung my Fall wreath on it and just loved the deep tones that the green door now adds to the autumnal colors. Le sigh!
